The professor who created the recycled wool gloves that US Senator Bernie Sanders wore at the presidential inauguration – spawning countless memes – is partnering with the Vermont Teddy Bear Company to create an entire line of gloves to meet growing demand, with part of profits going to Make a wish in Vermont.

“I can’t be more excited, because I personally can’t make 18,000 pairs of gloves,” said Jen Ellis on Saturday, estimating how many people contacted her. “Everyone is going to have their gloves – everyone.”

Ellis, a Vermont elementary school teacher who runs a side business that makes recycled wool gloves, gave Sanders a gift, and he wore them in the possession of President Joe Biden. His fashion look, also with a winter jacket made by Burton Snowboards, generated countless memes motivated by the photo taken by Agence France-Presse: The former presidential candidate can be found on social media taking a seat on the subway, on the moon and on the couch with the cast of “Friends”, among other creative locations.

Sanders raised at least $ 1.8 million in goods for charities from his image on January 20, sitting with his arms and legs crossed, wearing his brown coat and recycled wool gloves. Sanders launched so-called “Chairman Sanders” products, including t-shirts, sweatshirts and stickers, on its campaign website.

Vermont Teddy Bear, which makes handmade bears for all occasions, including a Bernie, approached Ellis to see if she would be interested in partnering.

“Jen will work hand in hand – glove in hand – with each of our designers” to ensure that the design of the ‘Bernie glove’ in various patterns is produced in a way that meets its quality standards, said Hayes McCarthy, vice – president of product innovation, brand creation and consumer experience. “We are excited to be in the gloves category.”

It is unclear when the first gloves will be available for purchase. Those interested in purchasing a pair can leave an email on the company’s website.

In the past, Vermont Teddy Bear made special bears to raise money for Make-A-Wish Vermont and recently gave office space to the organization for $ 1 a year, said James Hathaway, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Vermont. Hathaway said the charity lost $ 250,000 in revenue during the pandemic.

“We are very grateful to Vermont Teddy Bear, Jen and, of course, Bernie for being so Bernie,” said Hathaway in a statement.
