Giants to sign with Shun Yamaguchi

The giants and righties Shun Yamaguchi agree on a contract, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter) The deal is likely to be a split contract between the Major League and the Minor League, notes Slusser.

Yamaguchi estimates that he will come with minimal financial risk for the Giants, as the Blue Jays are about to pay him $ 3.175 million for the 2021 season. The Blue Jays recently released the right-handed Japanese to make room on their list of 40 men to the withdrawal of Joel Payamps waiver.

The 33-year-old has played for 14 seasons in Japan, where he has an ERA of 3.35 in 427 games, which included 50 games and 191 completed games. He signed a $ 6.35 million two-year contract to join Toronto before the 2020 season. The transition did not go as planned, however, as Yamaguchi pitched for 8.06 ERA / 6.43 FIP over 25 2/3 non-bullpen innings with substandard strikeout (21.7 percent) and walking rates (14.2 percent).
