‘Get ready for 500 murders’

Houston, Texas – HPD chief Art Acevedo made a bleak proclamation for the city of Houston on Tuesday, “Get ready for 500 murders,” Acevedo said during an afternoon press conference at HPD headquarters.

Acevedo admitting that his strategy to combat homicides in Houston is not working, resulting in another record year of murders, “Prepare for 500 murders at the pace that is happening”.

When reminded by KPRC 2 Investigates Mario Diaz that the increase in homicides is happening under his supervision, Acevedo said: “Okay, it is under my supervision, Mario and I will leave, bring the best boss, bring any boss. . but I have a prediction. “Perplexed by his response, Channel 2 Investigates asked Acevedo:” But does Miami say you are the best boss? ” The question was the result of the statement by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez on Monday, “I think it’s like taking Tom Brady or Michael Jordan from the chiefs of police.”

Acevedo’s answer?

“You know Mario, I broke up with you. In fact, I broke up with you for the rest of my life. Thank God.”

Acevedo was not in the mood to answer difficult questions about homicides fired during his tenure. Houston has seen a meteoric rise of more than 500 since the beginning of 2020, with some wondering if Acevedo’s departure for the much smaller city of Miami is simply a cut and directed by the chief.

“Let me tell you something. First of all, fighting crime is not the problem,” said Acevedo.

Acevedo then blamed the Harris County justice system for the revolving door for almost two minutes, blaming the judges for the murders, claiming that they are not working hard enough and putting criminals back on the streets.

That said, there are two homicides that occurred in Acevedo’s management that stand out the most. They are the shooting deaths of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas by HPD in the deadly and unsuccessful attack on Harding Street.

When asked how challenging it will be for Acevedo to leave Houston knowing that Harding Street remains unfinished? Acevedo said: “I will return to Harding Street because it happened under my supervision”.
