Marsden was known for his cover of the song “You Never Walk Alone” from the musical “Carousel”. It became the anthem of his hometown football team, Liverpool FC.
“Gerry’s voice accompanied our biggest nights. His hymn brought together players, teams and fans around the world, helping to create something really special,” said Liverpool FC in a statement. “Sung in times of celebration and commiseration, Gerry’s performance for You Never Walk Alone will forever be inextricably linked to the club he loved.”
Other hits include “Ferry Cross the Mersey” and “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying”.
Acting Mayor of Liverpool Wendy Simon said on Twitter, “Sincere condolences to Gerry’s family and friends. The Freedom of the City award for his contribution to culture has also supported many charities locally. Looking at his beloved Ferry Across the Mersey.”
