A transistor radio fan was arrested for impersonating an air traffic controller in Germany.
The 32-year-old Berliner was arrested Thursday night after police said he made contact with air traffic and gave false flight orders.
One of the aircraft he illegally contacted was a police helicopter that was sent to his neighborhood as part of a police operation to capture him, German officials said.
During a search of the suspect’s apartment, the police found two radios that were broadcasting on the frequencies necessary to make contact with the aircraft.
“For everyone who has asked about our police helicopter operations in Koepenick, an unusual prison,” Berlin policeman tweeted.
The suspect – whose name has not been released – is accused of making contact with state and federal helicopters, as well as passenger and transport aircraft, over a six-month period.
The man had become increasingly professional with his communications, but was giving “potentially dangerous” instructions. Fortunately, his crimes did not lead to incidents or accidents.
