Georgia’s Mark Webb raises eyebrows at Senior Bowl with cool interception

ATHENS – If there is a Georgia football player who needs to make the most of his Senior Bowl opportunity, it is Mark Webb.

On Wednesday, Webb did just that, impressing with a nifty interception of a Jamie Newman pass.

Webb measured at 6 feet-1 1/2 and 210 pounds, and with the NFL teams seeing him as more of a security guard than the nickleback position, he played for Georgia, where he was at his best on the race stand.

Webb is facing some of the country’s best in the Senior Bowl.

Pass coverage hasn’t been Webb’s forte, and twice in the last season, including one in the fourth quarter of the Florida 44-28 loss, Webb dropped the interceptions.

This made Wednesday’s training game much more important as it showed the NFL teams why coach Kirby Smart was so confident in Webb.

Webb, one of the 100 best players in Philadelphia who started his UGA career as a receiver, checks all the boxes as a disciplined leader and teammate.

There is no doubt that Webb is a popular player who has all the physical skills and knowledge of football to excel in the NFL.

Webb showed that he can tackle in the open with 21 stops this season in the 8 games he played, also ending with an interception and 2 pass separations.

Smart indicated that Webb would play in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, but he was sidelined for what appeared to be a foot or leg injury and did not play in the 24-21 victory over Cincinnati.

The “American” and “National” teams will return to Hancock-Whitney Stadium on Thursday for their final padded training of the week leading up to the 2:30 pm game on Saturday.

Senior bowl notes

Georgia Average Linebacker Monty rice remains out due to a foot injury that delayed him in the second half of the season. Rice, a finalist for the Butkus Prize last season, showed NFL scouts that he had improved pass coverage earlier in the season, so the value of the Senior Bowl to him was finding players.

Tright end Tre ‘McKitty continues to impress in practice, following a prediction made by Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy. Nagy, a former NFL scout with New England, Green Bay and Seattle, said McKitty would prove to be a better NFL player than a college player.

Some UGA vocal fans on social media are not done yet Jamie Newman leaving the show last August, but Newman remains loyal to the Bulldogs and shared the story of how he watched his new friends on TV last fall.

“I would have Wake on my TV and Georgia on my laptop,” said Newman, on NFL.com. “I only used Saturdays to fuel my fire.”
