Tre Brown, 19, was arrested on January 14 after creating false statements at the Kroger store where he worked in Duluth, Georgia, according to a press release from the Gwinnett County Police. He was charged with theft and released on bail the same day, according to online arrest records.
Brown is accused of generating more than 40 returns ranging from $ 75 to more than $ 87,000 for non-existent items and placing refunds on multiple credit cards, according to the police. Detectives claim he stole more than $ 980,000 in two weeks before employees of a supermarket chain noticed the fraudulent transactions and contacted the police, the statement said.
Brown bought two vehicles with the money, but totaled one before his arrest, the police statement said. He gave no details about the number or type of weapons the police claim he bought.
A substantial portion of the money was returned after his arrest, but Corporal Collin Flynn of Gwinnett police said he was still calculating the exact amount.
CNN was unable to contact Brown for comment and it is not clear whether he has a lawyer.
In a statement to CNN, Kroger said it could not comment on the ongoing investigation.
