Georgia Governor Brian Kemp joins Fox News Live to discuss the new voting law, Biden’s reaction

Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp will appear on Fox News Live at approximately 1:30 pm ET on Saturday to discuss the state’s controversial voting law.

The law, which Kemp passed on Thursday after the Republican-controlled state legislature passed the bill, calls for changes to the rules and processes for requesting an absent ballot, including requiring voters to present valid forms of photo identification. It also limits the drop-down boxes and the early voting period for the second round.

The Georgia bill, HB 513, “further guarantees” Georgia’s absentee ballots by mail, requiring photo identification, which the vast majority of Georgians support, “said the governor.” It is also adding days of early voting on weekends. “

House Democrats introduced HR 1, the People’s Law, which would expand absentee voting, end gerrymandering and restrict political donations of “dark money”, among other things, at the national level.

Kemp called HR 1 an “unconstitutional takeover” in an interview on Thursday with Fox News.

“We are expanding voting rights in Georgia. You are not hearing this from the other side. That is the truth, in addition to further ensuring the absentee ballot boxes, which did not exist before,” he said.

Democrats, including civil rights defenders, have argued that the legislation is a throwback to Jim Crow-era laws and puts voters of color at a disadvantage.

Stacey Abrams, who ran against Kemp in 2018, tweeted on Thursday that the law targeted “black and brown voters” and led to “the arrest of a black legislator who defended his voters’ voting rights”, which she said was “reminder of Georgia’s dark past.”

President Biden echoed that sentiment in a statement on Friday condemning HB 513 as “an attack on Georgia’s voting rights”.

“Instead of celebrating the voting rights of all Georgians, Republicans in the state passed a non-American law to deny people the right to vote,” said Biden. “… This is Jim Crow in the 21st century. This must end.”
