Georgia Bulldogs Adds Former West Virginia Mountaineers CB Tykee Smith

Georgia met one of its urgent needs in high school, adding former West Virginia holder Tykee Smith as a transfer.

Smith, an All-American from the third team of the Associated Press in 2020, announced on Twitter late on Sunday that he plans to move to Georgia. He will have two years of remaining eligibility.

Smith, a Philadelphia junior, had 61 tackles, eight tackles for defeat and two interceptions in 10 games with the Mountaineers last season. He started eight games as a freshman in 2019 and had 53 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Smith will meet with former West Virginia quarterback coach Jahmile Addae, who left for Georgia in January.

The Bulldogs lost their best security when Richard LeCounte and Mark Webb entered the NFL draft and Tyrique Stevenson was transferred to Miami. Three best cornerbacks, Tyson Campbell, Eric Stokes and DJ Daniel, also left for the NFL draft.

“We are a long way from being ready in terms of what we need to do with the secondary because we have a lot of inexperienced players,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after Saturday’s game. “We don’t get tired of these situations: friendly matches, passes, all the different looks we receive, because we need experience.”
