In the five years since winning the Super Bowl 50, the Broncos have generated a 9-7 record, followed by four consecutive losing seasons. New general manager George Paton, however, sees hope lurking in the team roster and capitalization situation.
“I just think they’ve done well in the past two years,” Paton told reporters on Tuesday, when asked how close the team is to being a candidate. “They have some good young players to work with. Now, how long it takes, I don’t know. We have to do our part, but I think there are some pieces in place. It’s a young football team. . . . They have a healthy salary cap because of John [Elway], Matt [Russell], Joe [Ellis] Is rich [Hurtado].
“Usually, in this league you don’t have much time to change things. You are not six, you have to be faster. I just think they have a few pieces in place. I’m not going to give you a calendar, but they have some young pieces in place, a healthy lid, so there are many reasons to be optimistic. “
There will be even more reasons to be optimistic when Paton changes “them” for “us”, as he is now an integral part of things in Denver. It may seem irrelevant, but it is a subtle indication that he may not be ready to fully embrace the work of those who came before him.
In that case, it is for good reason. The team has struggled for the past few seasons. Four consecutive years, with more defeats than victories.
Paton was also asked what he would like to accomplish in Denver than during 14 years in Minnesota.
“I would like to win a Super Bowl here,” said Paton.
This will not be easy. To get there, they / we / whatever needs to improve in a number of ways – especially with Chiefs, Chargers and Raiders in the same division.
