A popular weekend crossover event Impact Genshin and Kentucky Fried Chicken had to be closed in Shanghai and Hangzhou after apparently violating China’s ongoing covid-19 prevention measures, the fast food chain announced on the Chinese social media site Weibo today.

Impact GenshinKFC-themed restaurants across China drew large crowds at night, while fans lined up for the chance to get special pins with playable characters Diluc and Noelle, which over the past month were used to promote the continuous crossover.

According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, customers were asked to scream, “Meet in another world, enjoy delicious food!” for employees to earn a pin with the meal.

While some may find its rigid blocking tactics arrogant, China has largely managed to control the pandemic within its borders after the global outbreak began in the city of Wuhan a year ago. Life has almost always returned to normal, at least compared to the United States.

It is unclear what specific mandate or guideline these KFC meetings were violating, but it is understandable that Chinese officials are afraid to allow large crowds to meet for hours.

Impact Genshin developer miHoYo recently said who plans to bring the game’s exclusive items currently being offered as part of this KFC crossover – which includes red and white glider skin and special recipes – to players around the world at some point in the future. The pins that caused this night run in physical locations, however, are likely to remain exclusive to China.
