Can you see the plug?
General Motors
Everyone, get to know the new General Motors logo. The largest automaker in the United States decided it was time for a new look, as it sees a radically different future for its business – a business that revolves around electric cars and zero emissions.
The new logo was unveiled on Friday. It is a radical departure from the design in capital letters and slate blue of the extroverted look. This new logo features a tiny “gm”, a white background, a blue outline for the font and a rounded case design. The automaker said the goal was to invoke thoughts of a cleaner future with a gradient of bright blue, while evoking feelings of inclusion with the move to lowercase letters. I can take the first part, but the lower case looks dramatically less professional, at least in my opinion.
The last major change is a line below the “m” to create an electrical plug from the blank space in the letter m – reminiscent of the arrow on the FedEx logo and a sign that points directly to the home automaker’s plug Ultium battery and engine technology.
“This was a project that our team took personally, not just for us, but for the 164,000 employees that this logo represents,” Sharon Gauci, executive director of global industrial design at GM, said of the new logo. “At each stage, we wanted to be intentional and deliberate because this logo means creative and innovative thinking across the global General Motors family.”
The new logo will be launched across the automaker this year and will run anywhere where we would normally see the exit logo. It will be linked to a new marketing campaign entitled “Everybody In”. The campaign will lay the groundwork for the automaker, as it aims to put drivers in EVs and start a slow march away from the internal combustion engine.
