Despite becoming a dramatic actor in 2009, the media personality received worldwide recognition as socialite Astrid nine years later.

About how Crazy Rich Asians expanded his opportunities, the movie star said: ‘Before Crazy Rich Asians, I was not considered for leading roles in films.

‘There is a very select group of actors and actresses who are in that pool and I didn’t even get an audition, I just wasn’t in that conversation.

– Whereas now … Well, I’m told I’m talking about certain things and then you can meet the director, or at least have your chance. So it looks a little different.

‘As Crazy Rich Asians did so well internationally, I definitely felt a change at that time. Like, on Captain Marvel’s press tour, not being able to walk into an airport [in Singapore].

‘But then again, I feel like things have calmed down a bit more now and the slight madness of that time has gone. I feel like I can – touch the wood – lead my life normally now. ‘

The Fresh Meat star went on to confess that he thinks it is “ridiculous” that the topic of representation is still raised as a “talking point”.

Gemma insisted: ‘I have moments when I think,’ ‘Oh God, I wish we didn’t have to talk about race anymore.’ ‘Likewise, I wish we didn’t have to talk about why it is uncommon to have female leadership.

‘Why is it still the exception? Why is it still so unusual to have half the human race centered on these stories? It seems ridiculous that we are still signaling this as a point of discussion.

In another part of the interview, the Transformers star talked about joining forces with Meryl in the new drama Let Them All Talk, in which she plays the literary agent for her character Alice Hughes, Karen.

The former Oxford student was enthusiastic: ‘Obviously, I took the chance. It was a dream project. Much of the dialogue was improvised. There’s a scene, a lunch in New York with Meryl, which was actually the first scene I shot.

‘So I arrived on the set and the whole restaurant was full of 200 extras, you could hear a pin drop, I went in and sat down, so Meryl came and sat down, and we just had to improvise a scene.

– I don’t think I’ve ever had such a tense ass! I was petrified. There I am, possibly with the greatest actress of all time, and … ” Action! ” ‘

In the romance department, Gemma is dating Mamma Mia! star Dominic Cooper, 42, since 2018.

Regarding maintaining a private personal life, the Londoner said: ‘Over 10 years, you learn the importance of privacy, what you choose to share and what you don’t.

‘When you start, you don’t even know what’s important to keep to yourself – I didn’t know it at first, whereas now I think there are certain things that I absolutely know,’ ‘This is mine and it’s private. ”

‘For me, my comfort level is to have a clear distinction between what is for me and what I am happy to say.’

Actress Mary Queen of Scots also spoke about keeping the faith for the next generation after feeling “powerless” about the “government of our country” in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

She added: ‘I have definitely been fighting. I’ve had times when I felt completely desperate about things. I think for most of us, we realize how powerless we are as a whole in terms of the daily governance of our [country].

‘There seems to be no more responsibility for anyone. A complete lack of shame. So things that a minister or an adviser would have resigned five, ten years ago, now have no repercussions, so there is no accountability.

“But at the same time, I have hope – mainly because of the next generation. I think the generation below mine is much more politically aware than I was at that age, much more involved and active. ‘
