Gazelle closes used device exchange program next year

Former reform company Gazelle announced today that it is ending its popular exchange program. This program allowed people to exchange their old iPhones, iPads and Macs for cash.

Gazelle made the announcement in an email to customers today, saying that the exchange program will end on February 1, 2021. Customers have until January 31 to receive a quote and complete the exchange, says Gazelle.

As of February 1, 2021, we will no longer offer our exchange option at Gazelle. If you have an exchange that is in progress now, your exchange will continue as planned. You can also log in to your account here to see the status of your current exchanges.

You can still buy high quality used electronics for a fraction of the price in our online store. We are excited to continue to help you save with incredible prices on used smart devices!

Instead of the exchange program, Gazelle will focus on its ecoATM kiosks that pay “instant cash for used smartphones and tablets”. To date, the company says that these kiosks have collected more than 25 million devices, but the obvious caveat here is that they typically pay much less than the full program trade.

Although Gazelle does not offer details on why it is closing its trade-in business, the space has become much more competitive in recent years. Perhaps most notable is the fact that Apple makes it easier than ever to exchange old iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple watches for instant credit when purchasing new devices.
