King was waiting to report news of Kirby Bumpus’s wedding, at his godmother’s house, on a December day.
Gayle King’s daughter, Kirby Bumpus, got married in December at the house of his mother’s best friend, Oprah Winfrey.
King shared the news on Monday of his anchor post on CBS this morning, and she gave exclusive details to O Magazine, where she is general editor. She said she was waiting to announce the news.
Winfrey, who is Bumpus’ godmother, offered her palatial home for the wedding amid the coronavirus pandemic. The event’s guest list was extremely small and included only Winfrey and the longstanding love for Winfrey Stedman Graham; King’s son, Go, officiated the service.
“Nobody knows Kirby like her brother, so for him to do the ceremony it looked like it should be,” said King. “My son, Will, says: ‘We consider ourselves a tripod, and that day with Virgílio, we became a perfect square.’”
Photographer Joe Pugliese, who doesn’t normally take pictures at weddings, was scheduled to be at the media mogul’s house that week for a different session, which was canceled. Several of the beautiful images he captured were shared in his publication, O Magazine.
King noted that, to maintain safety, Bumpus conducted her dress adjustments via Zoom, where she obtained feedback from her mother, godmother and best friend. King said that, unfortunately, she was unable to help her daughter prepare for the big day, instead, she said outside to maintain social distance.

“Why [Winfrey] is very strict with COVID, Will and I were not allowed to go into the house, so I didn’t get a chance to zip the dress or help her put it on, but I knew that Oprah covered it all, so I knew she was in good hands, ”said King. “But it is difficult to see your daughter getting married and you cannot hug. That was very difficult. “
Bumpus became engaged to Virgil Miller in February 2019. King said the couple hopes to have a larger marriage in the near future as the pandemic subsides.
