A scripted GameStop movie is in development at HBO.
The project comes from executive producers Andrew Ross Sorkin of TBTF Productions, Len Amato of Crash & Salvage and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Television.
The film is described as exploring how a populist revolt by social media brokers defeated Wall Street at its own game, turning the stock market upside down and shaking the financial world at its core.
This is the latest on-screen project created to detail the ongoing stock market saga surrounding GameStop. A documentary was announced yesterday, while earlier this week a film adaptation of writer Mark Boal (“The Hurt Locker”, “Zero Dark Thirty”) was announced, with Noah Centineo set to star in a lead role. MGM also recently acquired the rights to the proposed Ben Mezrich author’s book, “The Antisocial Network”, which also plunges into the Wall Street fiasco. Grand Central Publishing plans to publish the book in the fall.
Sorkin is the co-creator of the Showtime drama “Billions”, which takes place in the world of hedge funds. He is also the author of the 2008 financial crisis book “Too Big to Fail” and co-produced a film adaptation previously for HBO Films, which was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards.
He is represented by the CAA.
Amato is the former head of HBO Filmes. During his time there, HBO Filmes won 43 Emmy Awards and 12 Golden Globes, winning the Emmy Outstanding Made For Television Movie in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Amato also developed and executive produced “Recount” 2008, which won 3 Emmy Awards, including Best Film for Television, and resulted in an Emmy for Amato as executive producer.
Blum, founder of Blumhouse, is three times nominated for an Oscar, twice a Primetime Emmy winner and twice a Peabody Award producer. Blumhouse is known for producing high quality films and television projects on micro-budgets, with Blum having produced more than 150 films and TV shows to date.
