The 21-year-old defender is committed to the South Carolina football program.
Shane Beamer and the South Carolina football team scored the third promise of the day, when 2021 class linebacker Kolbe Fields announced his promise to play for the Gamecocks next season, joining the transfer from South Georgia, David Spaulding, and Delaware protractor Darryl Williams. Fields made his announcement on Twitter Thursday night.
Fields is classified as a three-star recruit and is considered by 247 Sports to be the 60th best external linebacker in the country, as well as the 28th best potential player in his home state of Louisiana. Fields committed to the state of Oklahoma and Memphis during the recruitment process, but now chooses Gamecocks over offers from Houston, Purdue, SMU, Tulane and others.
As a veteran at Rummel High School, Fields recorded 98 tackles, 12 loss tackles and 3.5 sacks.
The defender adds depth to a group of linebackers who need production after losing their main defender over the past two seasons. Team captain Ernest Jones is now out of the NFL, which means Gamecocks need someone to take on their role as leader.
In the external linebacker, where Fields is likely to come into play, the South Carolina squad consists of only Sherrod Greene, Jahmar Brown and Damani Staley. Gilber Edmond and Rodricus Fitten can also slide back to the second level after playing in the BUCK position last season, but Gamecocks are still very thin. With a lack of depth, a new commit can affect early game time in your freshman season.
Fields becomes the 14th member of a South Carolina recruiting class, which now ranks 88th in the country.
