Gamecocks land in position of need

Transfer abroad to join South Carolina football.

South Carolina’s 2021 list is very limited as a wide receiver. The main pass receiver, Shi Smith, is out of the NFL after making 57 passes for 633 yards. He was easily the most dynamic player of the Gamecocks in the position and was responsible for more than 60% of the group’s production.

The rest of the team’s broadouts totaled just 40 receptions and 400 yards.

Fortunately, it looks like the wide receiver’s room will receive immediate help, as Georgia Tech pass receiver Ahmarean Brown announced his intention to move to South Carolina next season.

Brown has been with the Yellow Jackets for two seasons, making him a major threat to the game in Atlanta, averaging more than 18 yards per footprint in his young career. As a freshman, he stepped in, making an instant impact with 21 receptions for 396 yards and seven touchdown receptions. He saw a small drop in his second season, registering 12 receptions for 223 yards in eight games.

The Tampa native was considered a three-star prospect leaving high school, committing to Georgia Tech on offerings from Alabama, Michigan, Virginia Tech and more. His recruitment ended up going to the state of Iowa, Minnesota, and the Yellow Jackets, with the 1.50 m speedster opting for Atlanta instead of his other two finalists.

With the addition, South Carolina obtains an experienced employee in a position of need. Behind Shi Smith, the main receivers of Gamecocks consisted of a tight end and two running backs. No extended one has made any notable contribution. Transfer Jalen Brooks took 11 passes for 100 yards. Josh Vann totaled 10 receptions in 88 yards. No other wide receiver has achieved double digit reception.

Gamecocks probably haven’t just recruited the position, as Shane Beamer is expected to hit the transfer portal hard in the coming months to fill a class that is only halfway through at the moment.

He got off to a good start, though, hitting a slot receiver with speed. Brown is expected to take the field early and often in the 2021 season.
