University of South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer appointed Greg Adkins as the coach of the offensive line of Gamecocks, it was announced today. With the hiring of Adkins, coach Beamer finished his initial technical team on the field for the 2021 season.
“Greg is a veteran offensive line coach who has been very successful everywhere he went,” said coach Beamer. “He has experience at the SEC. (Offensive coordinator) Marcus Satterfield and I worked with him in Tennessee and he also worked in Georgia. He is an elite recruiter and builds a great relationship with his players, “added coach Beamer.
Adkins arrives in Carolina after spending the past three seasons as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall University, working under coach Doc Holliday. Marshall posted a 24-12 record for 2018-20 on what was his second service tour with Thundering Herd.
In 2020, Thundering Herd yielded 12 sacks in 10 games, occupying 13th place in the country, while allowing only 3.5 tackles per defeat, the fourth best mark in the country. Right guard Cain Madden received honors from America’s second team, both from the Associated Press and Walter Camp. Madden and his offensive line mate Josh Ball were nominated for the All-Conference USA for the first team, while Alex Mollette was a selection for the second team.
Under the tutelage of Adkins, striker Levi Brown was the center of the first team’s All-Conference USA in 2018 and 2019, while Madden received second team honors in 2019.
Adkins began his coaching career in his alma mater, serving as a defensive, tight end and offensive line mentor in Marshall for five seasons from 1991-95. He was part of the team that won the 1992 National Division I-AA championship and appeared in three other games for the national I-AA title (1991, 93 and 95).
Between his two missions in Marshall, Adkins trained the offensive line at six schools, including four Power-5 schools, two of which are at the SEC. His curriculum includes stints in Georgia (1996-2000), Troy (2001-02), Tennessee (2003-08), Syracuse (2009-12), Oklahoma State (2015-17) and Charlotte (2018). He also handled recruitment roles in Syracuse, Tennessee and Troy; trained tight end and defensive line in Georgia; he was a mentor to the tight ends in Tennessee; and served as Charlotte’s racing game coordinator and interim offensive coordinator.
Adkins also has experience in the NFL, having spent two years in Buffalo as the 2013-14 tight end coach.
Born on March 25, 1968, Adkins is from Cross Lanes, West Virginia. He played four seasons as an attacking striker for Marshall, graduating in 1990.
