We love RPGs. You love RPGs. Everyone loves a good RPG, and 2020 ended up being a fantastic year for them. Whether it was reissues full of new content or entirely new experiences that took established franchises in new directions, there really was something for everyone. However, we simply have to find out what is the best of the best. Here are the best PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 RPGs of 2020.
We lost track of how many times Final Fantasy VII Remake makes us smile like idiots during our time with the release, but that is the power of this shockingly well done remake. Doing justice to the original Final Fantasy VII would never be easy, but somehow Square Enix managed to recapture the magic, while expanding its world and its beloved cast of characters. What’s more, the battle system is exemplary – a real evolution of the series’ tried and true ATB formula. Of course, this is only the first chapter of a new saga, but we can’t wait to see what’s coming.

Demon’s Souls for PS5 is exactly the same game as the 2009 original, which means it is still an excellent RPG. Five vast and mysterious worlds host some of the most unnerving next-generation games at the moment, but you can conquer your inhabitants in almost any way possible. The variety of buildings is extraordinary in Demon’s Souls, with a long list of weapons and armor to customize your character and lots of stats to increase when you gather enough Souls to do so. It is the best game available on the PS5 now and one of the biggest RPGs of 2020.

A game we started to call Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest here at the Push Square office, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the most interesting RPGs we’ve played in a long time. Take everything we love about Yakuza – the realistic setting, the brilliant characters, the exciting stories, the insane side activities – and combine it with … A group adventure with turn-based battles? Yes, and it works very well. RGG Studio took a real risk with this one, and it’s worth it in what is one of the most memorable and unique games of 2020.

Our 2017 Game of the Year is back and better than ever – despite already being a 10/10 masterpiece. Persona 5 Royal is not only one of the best RPGs for PS4 – it is one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made. An absolute delight for the senses, and enhanced to a degree where the original Persona 5 becomes completely redundant. Royal’s new ending is incredible, his new characters are fantastic and his countless gameplay improvements take him to previously unthinkable levels.
