The Charleston County (SC) Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is replacing Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach, a major attraction in the area. The current Folly Beach Pier, opened in 1995, is deteriorating due to marine drills, such as “ship worms”, and the wear and tear of the marine environment.

The CCPRC will replace the existing pier with a new structure that will be very similar, but will be built using piles, beams and reinforced concrete substructure instead of wood, to extend its expected useful life. The reinforcing steel that will remain inside the concrete is being anti-rust by Galvan Industries in Harrisburg, NC

Galvanized rebar according to Galvan’s ASTM A767 Class 1 will resist rust for decades. This is important. Rusty rebar can exert an enormous tensile stress from the inside out on reinforced concrete, which causes chipping or cracking. Hot-dip galvanized zinc coatings form an impermeable metallic zinc barrier around the steel to insulate the steel surface from concrete, preventing damage and giving the structure a longer service life.

In addition to the concrete elements, the new pier will be reminiscent of the old pier. It will continue to offer everything visitors love on the existing pier, including public restrooms and retail facilities. Traditional wooden decks, benches and a large shade structure over the pier head are included in the project. Two locations along the pier walkway will be slightly widened to allow for additional fishing opportunities and more efficient pedestrian access. The opening of the new pier is scheduled for spring 2023.

“We are very happy and proud to have been chosen as a galvanizer for such a high level project,” said Galvan President Laurens Willard. “I hope our grandchildren will find the new pier standing strong many, many years from now.”
