even though Wonder Woman 1984 takes place in the 1980s, Wonder Woman’s clothes are not very centered in the 1980s in the film. Gal Gadot has a series of scenes in which he wears suits and shoes from the 1980s, but most of the time his wardrobe is discreet.
While this can be a little confusing for some viewers, it was done for a reason. Gadot explained the thinking process behind Wonder Woman’s wardrobe during a recent interview.

When asked about her wardrobe in the film, Gadot explained that only specific items from the time were selected for her character.
“High pants and shoulder pads, yes,” Gadot told Variety. “And big hair. And lip liner. We got the good stuff from the 80s ”.
It may seem strange that the central character of a film set in the 1980s is not wearing a lot of 80s-themed clothing, but Gadot confirmed that the decision was made on purpose.
“We feel that Diana should be – she should always look timeless,” said Gadot. “So we wanted her to have a timeless and elegant look, but to have the look of someone who is in the 80’s. So, we were very precise about her appearance. “

Co-star Chris Pine is dressed in a ton of clothes inspired by the 80s from start to finish, which Gadot believes he wore effortlessly.
“I’m used to it, he loved it,” said Gadot. “He’s the only one who can take that look, honestly.”

Pine took it a step further than just putting clothes on the screen, however. In fact, he wore ’80s clothes throughout the set, even when he wasn’t shooting scenes.
“But in real life, he actually got his own pack and used to ride [a] cycling through sets or locations wherever we were, ”said Gadot. “AND [he’d] come visit us and he looks completely like someone from the 80s. He loved all fashion and style, but he – at the time he was wearing it for his personal life – and looked good on him. “

Kristen Wiig’s co-star also wears a variety of stylish and classy 80s outfits throughout the film. According to costume designer Linda Hemming, there is a reason why she undergoes such a drastic transformation in the wardrobe as the story progresses.
“When you wear one of these stories, your job is to develop each character in costume,” Hemming told the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “You try to give little indications of how they are changing when you look at all of her clothes, she is going from being a slightly inelegant and intelligent woman to a stronger, aggressive and animalistic woman, culminating in what she becomes in the end.”

Hemming also invested a lot of time and energy in the design of Wonder Woman’s golden costume, which was a new addition to the character’s iconic look.
“The new gold costume took months and months to make,” said Hemming. “It makes reference to the history of the past in the history of the Amazon. He needed to look magical and shine, with a magical aura and added extra protective properties. It couldn’t just look like normal armor. Many of my inspirations came from Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler. It needed to have that deep golden decay for the material. It is molded or printed from a urethane material.
