Gaetz joins the ‘#FreeBritney’ movement, asks for a hearing on guardianship

Deputy Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., And Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a member of the House Oversight Committee ranking came together to “defend” the #FreeBritney movement and convened a hearing on the issue of conservatories on the Judiciary Committee of the Chamber.

The two lawmakers joined forces in a press release and a letter sent on Tuesday, where they requested a hearing “to review and examine the situation of Americans unjustly imprisoned in custody”.

Guardianships are legal agreements in which an individual appointed by the court manages the affairs of an adult, or pupil, who is unable to take care of himself due to reasons such as old age or mental or physical illness.

The practice recently gained prominence after the #FreeBritney movement – which aims to free popstar Britney Spears from her controversial tutelage by her father – gained momentum online after a documentary about her tutelage by the New York Times.

“If the guardianship process can uproot the agency of a woman who was at the height of her life and one of the most powerful pop stars in the world, imagine what it can do to people who are less powerful and have less voice,” he wrote Gaetz in his statement.

“I heard the story of these people in Florida and I am concerned about access to due process for the wards,” added the Florida congressman.

In a statement to Fox News on Tuesday, Gaetz said he believed Spears would be a “great witness” and would bring a lot to the table if she testified.

“I think Britney would be a great witness … and she would probably have a lot to say on the subject,” said Gaetz.

The letter was sent by the two congressmen to the president of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, DN.Y., and described the committee’s responsibility as “safeguarding the rights guaranteed to Americans by the United States Constitution.”

“These rights include free will to direct their own affairs and legal autonomy over their finances,” the letter began. “When situations suggest an unfair deprivation of these rights by the government, we have an obligation to oversee and explore possible solutions.”

The two Republicans noted that “there has been growing public concern” about “using guardianship” to rob “personal freedoms at the behest of others” through manipulation of the legal system.

They also noted that “a project financed by the Department of Justice to examine the exploitation of conservatives” revealed that “financial exploitation by conservatives is often not controlled by the courts” and that there is an “extreme need” for reform around guardianship and guardianship .

The letter mentioned recent concerns about guardianship by the American Civil Liberties Union – which said the practice should only be “used as a last resort” – and people being “stripped of virtually all of their civil rights through guardianship and guardianship”.

Gaetz and Jordan then moved on to the “most striking example” in the case of Spears’ tutelage.

“Since 2008, Ms. Spears has been under an orderly judicial tutelage,” wrote the congressmen. “The facts and circumstances that gave rise to this agreement remain in dispute, but involve questionable motives and legal tactics by his now conservative father, Jamie Spears.”

They pointed out that Spears expressed strong opposition to his father, Jamie, being his conservative in two court appearances in 2020 and that, “[d]despite these pleas, “Spears’ father remained his tutor.

“Mrs. Spears is not alone,” wrote Gaetz and Jordan before pointing to another case involving Daniel Gross.

Gross was a New York resident who was “forced against his will to guardianship after being hospitalized with cellulite while visiting his daughter in Connecticut”.

“In what the judge labeled ‘a terrible judicial error’, Mr Gross was locked up in a Connecticut nursing home for 10 months, despite his requests for release,” congressmen wrote.

Gaetz and Jordan concluded the letter by asking for a hearing “to examine whether Americans are unjustly imprisoned in custody”.

Twitter users asked Oprah to interview Spears on his show after his controversial interview with Prince Harry and Megan Markle.

Nadler’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News’s request for comment on the letter or whether the House Judiciary Committee would hold a hearing on the guardianship issue.
