Fultondale devastated by a possible tornado: ‘Like a bomb exploded’

Bad weather caused significant storm damage across the city of Fultondale on Monday night.

Fultondale police chief DP Smith said there were felled trees and overturned cars in the Walker Chapel, Indian Valley Road and Carson Road areas.

It is not known at this time whether there was any injury.

Dave Moerbe, senior pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gardendale and his son, Sam, 18, ran to their old neighborhood in Fultondale when they heard about the devastation there.

The area – Georgetown Lane – is close to Black Creek Park.

The Moerbe family lived there until about a year ago.

“It looks like a bomb went off,” said Sam.

He said that about 80% of the houses in the neighborhood had their roof damaged and about 20% of them collapsed.

All the trees in Black Creek Park were felled, father and son said, and the cars were moved, if not overturned.

“It’s just devastating,” said Dave Moerbe.

“There are 45 houses in this community and all of them are damaged. … Debris is everywhere, ” he said. “We pulled a lady out the back window because she couldn’t get out.”

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said a confirmed tornado was headed from Fultondale to the Center Point area.

According to the Jefferson County EMA, there is damage from land storms ranging from Fultondale to Center Point.

The NWS asked alabamians to find a way to receive weather alerts overnight.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
