Fujifilm’s GFX 100S packs a huge 102 megapixel sensor into a compact body

In terms of design, the GFX 100S looks different from all previous GFX cameras. It is smaller to start with the weatherproof body weighing just 900 grams or 1.9 pounds. It now has a large upper display in place of the shutter speed dial found on the GFX 50S, and a mode dial instead of an ISO dial. All of these things are defined using the front and rear dials, with the top screen providing a view similar to a dial of the settings. Another novelty is an AF joystick.

With the company’s latest X processor, it can record up to 5 fps – impressive considering the huge image sizes. It will be easier to keep your photos sharp even in low light, thanks to the 5-axis stabilization in the body that can reduce shaking by 6 points.

The new processors also allow you to focus as quickly as 0.16 seconds in very low light up to -5.5EV. This is aided by phase detection pixels that cover almost 100 percent of the frame. It also includes continuous AF tracking and face / eye detection, which is ideal for the type of portrait work for which a camera like this is designed.

If you want to record 4K video with shallow cinematic depth of field, the GFX 100S is Fujifilm’s most capable large sensor camera to date. You can record 4K at up to 30 fps in 10-bit 4: 2: 0 F-log recording internally or produce 10-bit 4: 2: 2 F-Log or 12-bit RAW to an external recorder. However, 1080p slow motion is limited to 60 fps. Files can be recorded at Long Gop (200 Mbps) or All Intra at up to 400 Mbps.

Fujifilm's GFX 100S has a huge 102 megapixel sensor and a compact body. It is shown here held next to someone by the leg, cut only by the camera and the leg.

Fujifilm

The GFX 100S has the same battery as the X-T4, but can deliver up to 460 shots on one charge, Fujifilm said. However, it is not available with a battery grip like the GFX 50S. Other features include a 3.69 million-dot OLED color display with 100 percent coverage, dual UHS-II SD card slots, micro-HDMI ports, microphone, headphones and USB-C 3.2 and a touch screen inclination of three directions with 2.36 million points.

With the GFX 100S, Fujifilm has taken a big step towards making its large format cameras more modern, but it doesn’t come cheap. He will arrive in March 2021 for $ 6,000 just for the body. Fujifilm also unveiled the GF80mm f / 1.7 lens, an extremely fast primer lens that will create “perfectly smooth bokeh”, according to Fujifilm. It also arrives in March for $ 2,300.
