A $ 250 Gengar pillow is being released in Japan and it’s … well, it fits the character.
But if you like to get your hands on it, you’re probably out of luck. The plush, developed by P-Bandai, was made available for pre-order last night, but sold out in less than 75 minutes.
The cushion, in the style of the classic Ghost Pokémon, is 48 cm high and 53 cm wide. This is slightly smaller than its ‘real’ size – Pokedex places the average Gengar at 1.5m from tail to tip – but it compensates for its tiny body with its huge tongue. Packed inside the main body of the pillow is over a meter and a half of cushioning, which can be rolled out for various (apparently) sleep-related purposes.
It is difficult to assess exactly what purpose the plush is intended for. Last year, Bandai launched an official Metapod sleeping bag, but it is much more complicated to determine where you should rest your head when it comes to Gengar. Some promotional photos show a model curling her tongue to use as a pillow, but others show the model resting her head inside the Pokémon’s mouth, using the outstretched tongue as a very thin mattress, while still others suggest that the tongue can act as a blanket. . I also have several questions about why Bandai continues to position its bedding items as part of an entrepreneur’s home work environment, but that’s another matter.

It is unclear whether there will be a second wave of pre-sales or sales, or whether the item will be shipped separately outside of Japan. However devastating this may be, however, you can at least rest easy knowing that the pillow is quite accurate for Pokémon games, thanks to Gengar’s ability to learn Lick and Hypnosis.
