‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry flirted with Julia Roberts ‘by fax’ to get a cameo, says the show’s writer

The creators of “Friends” are talking about how Matthew Perry got Julia Roberts to appear on the show in 1996.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the people behind “Friends” revealed that Perry, 51, got the “Pretty Woman” actress to appear on the sitcom after a few “flirtations” via fax.

“Receiving Julia Roberts was incredibly exciting,” said the show’s co-creator, Marta Kaufman. “We knew she would have the right touch for that. And when she said yes, it was really good”

Co-creator Kevin S. Bright then stepped in, revealing Perry’s role in getting Roberts into the big role.

“Do you know the story of how we got it? Matthew [Perry] asked her to participate in the program, “said Bright.” She replied to him: ‘Write me an article on quantum physics and I will do it.’ My understanding is that Matthew went out and wrote an article and faxed it to her the next day. “

Team editor Alexa Junge noted that they “may have met before the episode, but she was interested in him from afar because he is so charming”.

“There was a lot of flirting over the fax,” added Junge. “She was giving him questionnaires like, ‘Why should I go out with you?’ And everyone in the writers’ room helped explain why. He could have done very well without us, but there was no doubt that we were on Matthew’s team and trying to make it happen for him. “

Roberts, 53, appeared in 1996 in two parts, “The One After the Superbowl”. In the episode, Roberts plays Susie Moss, a former friend of Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, who tries to get back at him through a fake phone call after a childhood prank.

The two dated for a short time after the episode, according to People magazine.
