Georgia’s newly elected Democratic representative, Nikema Williams, tabled a resolution that would ban President Donald Trump from entering the United States Capitol at any time after his term as president ended, essentially banning and blocking him from the federal building.
The entire resolution says: “The Sergeant of Arms of the House of Representatives, Sergeant of Arms and the Senate Porter and the United States Capitol Police must take the necessary steps to prohibit President Donald John Trump from entering the United States Capitol. United States at any time after the end of his term as President. “
Williams’ project came a day after Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives – including all House Democrats and ten House Republicans – for “inciting insurrection.”
Those impeaching Trump said he incited the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill after leading an afternoon “Stop the Steal” demonstration, in which he repeated his refuted claim that Democrats used a nationwide electoral fraud conspiracy to steal the election for President-elect Joe Biden.

At the January 6 rally, Trump said without foundation that he won the election “by an overwhelming victory”, although Biden won by more than 7 million popular votes. Trump then encouraged his followers to march to the Capitol.
“We will never give in, it doesn’t. You don’t give in when theft is involved,” Trump told his supporters at the rally. “We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you won’t have a country anymore.” He has since called his comments “entirely appropriate”.
Five people died in the subsequent rebellion, including an insurrectionist shot in the neck while attempting to enter the Chamber’s antechamber, a woman trampled to death by other Trump supporters and a police officer who the insurrectionists beat to death with a fire extinguisher. Trump supporters also stole computer equipment, potentially a violation of national security.
Since the insurrection, Democratic members of the House say they do not feel safe with Republican colleagues who may have sympathized with the rebels who sought to prevent Biden from becoming president. This includes the 138 House Republicans who voted on January 6 against the Biden Electoral College’s victory.
On Tuesday, the House had metal detectors installed, but Republicans have been passing them by ignoring the guards stationed there. On Wednesday, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that any politician who does these things will be fined $ 5,000 or more.
Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said metal detectors seem necessary, given the fact that Republican Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado once pledged to carry a firearm on Capitol Hill, which is prohibited by federal rules. Ocasio-Cortez said Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a Facebook ad in September 2020 in which Greene threatened to shoot Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive black lawmakers.
On Wednesday, Democratic representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey said she witnessed Republican lawmakers giving insurrectionists who would soon win the right a tour of the Capitol building the day before they infiltrated the building to threaten lawmakers.
