Fred racially abused online after Manchester United defeat to Leicester | Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Fred was the target of racist abuse after his team lost 3-1 in the FA Cup quarter-finals to Leicester on Sunday.

Fred was to blame for Leicester’s opening goal when he gave the ball to Kelechi Iheanacho in front of the goal, and the Leicester striker bypassed goalkeeper Dean Henderson to score the goal.

After the match, the 28-year-old’s Instagram account became the target of online abuse, with several of the comments of a racial nature.

The Brazilian international is one of several United players who have been abused in recent weeks. Marcus Rashford posted a statement about the comments addressed to him in late January, while Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe were also targeted, as well as Lauren James, of the women’s team.

Manchester United had previously condemned abuses directed at its players by “stupid idiots”.

“Manchester United has zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaign against it through our All Red All Equal initiative,” said a statement.
