The “Frasier” revival was officially commissioned at Paramount Plus.
The star of the original series Kelsey Grammer will return in the title role, in addition to being an executive producer. Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli will serve as writers and executive producers, with Tom Russo of Grammnet Productions and Jordan McMahon also serving as executive producers. The series will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Grammnet Productions, exclusively for Paramount +. The announcement was made as part of ViacomCBS investor day presentation on Wednesday.
“Having spent more than 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and acting in several, I would like to congratulate Paramount + for its entry into the world of streaming,” said Grammer. “I look forward to sharing the next chapter in Dr. Frasier Crane’s ongoing journey.”
Grammer played the role of Dr. Frasier Crane in three different television series – “Cheers”, “Wings” and “Frasier” – tying the record for the longest-running television character. He won six Emmys, three Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Tony Award during his career. In total, he received 18 Emmy nominations, eight at the Golden Globe, 16 at the Screen Actors Guild and two at Tony. He is also set to star in a multi-camera comedy on ABC, alongside Alec Baldwin.
He is represented by UTA and Vault Entertainment.
“‘Frasier’ is one of the most acclaimed comedies in the history of modern television and really sets a premium narrative,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “There has long been a fan call for your return, and that call has now been answered thanks to the incredible Kelsey Grammer replaying his iconic role as Dr. Frasier Crane and a brilliant creative plan by Joe, Chris and Kelsey. We can’t wait to reveal your next chapter on Paramount +. “
Grammer has been trying to get the revived show off for some time. “Frasier” remains one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, having won 37 Emmy Awards over its 11 seasons and 264 episodes on NBC. The series also starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin, none of whom are currently connected to the revival.
