France imposes suspension of EU-US trade dispute – POLITICO

EU and US President-elect Joe Biden must “find a method” to end a trade dispute that has “poisoned everyone,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in an interview published today .

“The issue that has poisoned everyone is the escalation of prices and taxes on steel, digital technology, Airbus and more, specifically our wine sector,” Le Drian told the weekly newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.

“If we could quickly find a method that would allow us to resolve this dispute with Europe and France, it would be a step forward,” added Le Drian. “It can take time, but in the meantime, we can always order a moratorium.”

Le Drian’s comments coincide with those of other EU officials, who are looking to turn the page on four years of transatlantic tension with US President Donald Trump and his “America First” strategy.

The Trump administration announced on Monday that it would start charging new taxes on aircraft parts and other products from France and Germany, such as wine, as part of the longstanding fight over subsidies for aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing.
