Four thousand Americans died of COVID-19 on Thursday, the worst pandemic day yet

For the first time during the coronavirus pandemic, the United States recorded more than 4,000 virus-related deaths in one day. It is the third consecutive day that the country has exceeded the number of deaths in a single day – this time, 4,085 Americans lost their lives in just 24 hours, according to data from Johns Hopkins University pandemic trackers. For comparison, several countries – such as Japan, Australia and South Korea – recorded far fewer than 4,000 deaths during the entire pandemic. Another 274,703 US COVID-19 cases were recorded on the same day, as the pandemic accelerates across the country. In Arizona, one in 119 people tested positive this week, making the state what health officials call the latest “hot spot in the world” for the virus.
