Four dead, including a child, after the stimulus check dispute lead to gunfire

A man was arrested on Sunday in Indiana after being accused of fatally shooting three adults and a child after a dispute over a stimulus check.

Indianapolis police said Malik Halfacre, 25, was arrested on Sunday after police found four bodies at block 300 on North Randolph Street on Saturday night.

The victims were identified as Eve Moore, 7; Daquan Moore, 23; Anthony Johnson, 35; and Tomeeka Brown, 44, the police said.

A woman, identified in a statement as the mother of Halfacre’s 6-month-old daughter, Malia Halfacre, survived the shooting. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. His status was unknown on Wednesday.

In an interview with the police, Halfacre said that he and his daughter’s mother argued “because he wanted part of his stimulus check,” said the statement.

He told authorities he shot everyone inside the house, then fled the residence with the money, according to the document.

The baby was also taken, which prompted authorities to issue a state Amber Alert.

On Sunday morning, the baby was found safely with his sister after she called the police and reported that she was with the missing child, the statement said.

“She said that her brother, Malik Halfacre, knocked on the door, went in and left the baby and all his things before leaving,” according to the department.

The sister told police “that Halfacre admitted killing four people and told her details about how it happened,” said the statement.

She added that her brother sought help from his friend and was hiding in the attic of a house in Indianapolis, where he was later taken into custody by authorities, according to the document.

Craig McCartt, the deputy chief of police investigations, said on Monday that Halfacre faces four counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of theft, The Indianapolis Star reported.

He is being held at Marion County Jail. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, the records show. It is not clear whether he obtained a lawyer.
