‘Fortnite’ Creator Epic Games grants its first animated film to ‘Gilgamesh’

Epic Games is taking film production seriously. The company behind the successful game Fifteen days and the engine that powers it, Unreal, made a concession for the production of animated feature films Gilgamesh. This is the first known film award.

Here are the details:

  • The film is based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, an ancient Mesopotamian epic poem and the cornerstone of world literature. He will tell about the “quest for immortality and his rivalry with the wild man Enkidu” of the mythological hero Gilgamesh, according to Deadline, who was the first to report the news.
  • Hook Up Animation, a studio based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will animate the film, incorporating Unreal in its pipeline. Studio credits include Winnie the Pooh: ABC for Disney TV Animation, Xilam Animation’s Lucky Luke, and commercials for clients such as Cartoon Network, MTV and Turner.
  • Argentine documentary filmmaker Tomas Lipgot directs. His company, Duermevela, is partnering with Epic and Hook Up on the project, as well as international sales and remake rights company Filmsharks (which is also based in Buenos Aires).
  • Epic is providing the grant through Megagrants, the $ 100 million fund it launched in 2019 to support projects using the Unreal Engine. The money has already been given to hundreds of projects in games, entertainment, education and others. Relish Interactive, a Toronto-based digital content company that is expanding its line of animation, is among the recipients.
  • Unreal is at the heart of the real-time rendering revolution in animation and vfx. It is widely used in virtual production, the set of techniques that allows filmmakers to visualize and adjust synthetic elements throughout production. Some are using the software to introduce puppets in real time into their animation pipeline.
