Former UTC player and coach Jimmy Lindsey named South Carolina assistant

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga linebacker Jimmy Lindsey, who also had two separate stints as a coach with the Mocs, was announced on Sunday as the South Carolina defensive line coach.

Lindsey spent the last season as a defense coach in Illinois, but now joins the inaugural team of Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer. Tracy Rocker was retained as a defensive line coach by Beamer of Will Muschamp’s team, but Rocker left last week for the same role at Auburn.

Prior to Lindsey’s season with Fighting Illini, he spent three seasons in Western Kentucky under the command of defensive coordinator Clayton White, who now oversees South Carolina’s defense with a specific focus on internal linebackers.

“Jimmy has a really impressive track record of success with the guys he coached and was highly recommended by Coach White, who worked with him in Western Kentucky,” said Beamer in a statement. “I love that he has connections with the Carolinas – born in South Carolina and raised in North Carolina – and also trained and recruited in this region.”

Lindsey played for Buddy Green’s Mocs from 1996-99, serving as team captain in his senior season. He started his coaching career with Green’s successor, Donnie Kirkpatrick, as an assistant student during the 2000-01 seasons and worked as a linebacker coach in 2002 after graduating in sports administration.

Returning to his alma mater in the 2010-11 seasons under Russ Huesman as a defensive line coach and special team coordinator, Lindsey developed Josh Williams for an All-Southern Conference selection.

Beamer appointed nine of his 10 full-time assistants. Its offensive coordinator and defender coach, Marcus Satterfield, was UTC’s offensive coordinator for Huesman’s first four seasons of 2009-12.

Operating deficit

The University of Tennessee sports department had an operating deficit of $ 488,857 during the fiscal year 2020 that ended on June 30, Knoxville News-Sentinel reported on Sunday.

“The revenue reductions related to the cancellation of spring sports and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament were significant,” Volunteers sporting director Phillip Fulmer told News-Sentinel, “but the department was able to mitigate that impact through several cost containment measures We are also especially grateful to Tennessee Fund members and ticket holders, who made a difference through their generous donations and tickets.

“This result is much better than the initial projections for March and April.”

Pope withdraws

Tennessee tight end Austin Pope, who missed his fifth year as a senior last fall after undergoing back surgery over the summer, withdrew his name from the NCAA transfer portal. Pope entered the portal last month.
