Former Tennessee running back Eric Gray going to Oklahoma as a transfer

Former Tennessee running back Eric Gray is moving to Oklahoma, he announced on Wednesday.

Gray, who led Tennessee with 772 yards and finished second in the team with 30 receptions in 2020, entered the NCAA transfer portal last week after the Vols fired coach Jeremy Pruitt.

The Gray 5-foot-10, 205 pounds was supposedly deciding between Oklahoma and Texas, and he posted his decision on Twitter on Wednesday night.

Gray emerged at the end of the 2019 season, leading Tennessee with four touchdowns and finishing second with 539 yards in 101 races. He received MVP honors in Tennessee’s Gator Bowl victory over Indiana.

The Memphis native ended his career in Vols with 1,311 multi-faceted yards and 11 touchdowns (eight races, three receiving). ESPN ranked Gray as the 19th running back and the 263rd overall player in the 2019 recruiting class.

Gray was detained at the end of the Tennessee season against December 19 for undisclosed reasons, but sources told ESPN that he lost the game because of an internal investigation into possible NCAA violations. In announcing Pruitt’s resignation last week, Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman said the internal investigation indicated that serious NCAA violations had been committed.

Oklahoma also loses lead rusher Rhamondre Stevenson, who will enter the 2021 draft of the NFL, while rusher # 2 TJ Pledger is transferred to Utah. The Sooners averaged 179.7 run yards per game in 2020.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach contributed to this report.
