COLOMBIA, SC – South Carolina’s famous Art Whisnant basketball stadium has died, the school announced on Wednesday.
No cause of death was reported. He was 81 years old.
Whisnant played for the Gamecocks from 1959 to 1962 and was a national team three times at the Atlantic Coast Conference during that time. He ended his career with 1,505 points, 11th of all time among the top scorers in South Carolina’s career. He averaged 19.1 points per game in 79 college disputes.
Whisnant was also the grandfather of Masters champion and current No. 1 in the world, Dustin Johnson.
Whisnant was named to the school’s hall of fame in 2001. He joined the state’s athletics hall in 2016.
Whisnant was the choice of the Los Angeles Lakers in the fifth round in 1962.
