Former South Carolina cornerback Johnny Dixon moves to Penn State

Former South Carolina defender Johnny Dixon was transferred to the Penn State football team.

Dixon announced his decision via Twitter on Monday morning.

Dixon entered the transfer portal last week after two seasons in Columbia. The Tampa, Florida native made a debut for Gamecocks as a real freshman in 2019. During that season, Dixon made three tackles in total and even had an interception.

The cornerback played a bigger role last fall, when he started in eight of the ten games in South Carolina. The cornerback made 34 tackles in total, recovered a fumble and had five pass deviations. His best performance came against Ole Miss when he tied five tackles in the record of the season and had that recovery from fumble.

Dixon will bring some nice depth to Penn State’s back room. After several injuries, notably Tariq Castro-Fields, several young players had to move up. Redshirt freshman Joey Porter Jr. and sophomore Keaton Ellis played well in growing roles this fall, while Marquis Wilson and Daequan Hardy were also solid in rotating positions.

As a recruit in the 2019 class, Dixon received 19 offers, including Penn State. According 247 Sports, Dixon even made an official visit to Happy Valley in September 2018 for White Out against Ohio.

The former Gamecock is now the second player to join Penn State through the transfer portal this month. Former Baylor runner John Lovett committed to the Lions of Nittany as a graduation transfer last week.
