Former scout proposes first round negotiation involving Jets Sam Darnold

The Jets and general manager Joe Douglas said they would hear quarterback Sam Darnold’s offers, especially with the team holding second overall choice in this year’s draft. An NFL draft analyst believes that the Jets could not only select a quarterback with that choice, but potentially trade Darnold for another bullish selection.

Speaking on a conference call with members of the media on Tuesday, NFL Network draft analyst and former scout Daniel Jeremiah proposed a way for the Jets to get another first-round choice if an exchange included Darnold and another draft choice.

“When you look at Carolina, Denver and San Francisco, I think all three teams could make sense as business partners for Sam Donald if they decided to go that route,” said Jeremiah. “I know people say there is no way to negotiate a choice among the top 12 for Sam, but I think there is a way for you to work on something, associating Sam with another choice. For me, I would be trying to figure out a way for you to make Sam and choose 34 and see if that would be enough to get there in the top eight, nine or 12 positions. Now you are the Jets and you are dancing up there with those reeds. “

Jeremiah had the Jets take BYU quarterback Zach Wilson in his latest mock draft. Jeremiah said that if the Jets decided to go with Wilson, he would save the Jets $ 10 million and give the team an extra year of control.

The Jets already have five choices in the first two rounds. With so many needs on both sides of the ball, Jets have the flexibility to add some impact players and position themselves for a good draft. Jeremiah said that what Douglas does with the second overall choice will be the most important decision he will make as the team’s general manager.

“Joe is going to have a lot of fun with this draft, because he has an arsenal of weapons to use here to try to put this squad in better shape,” said Jeremiah. “It all starts with choosing number two and starts with Sam Donald’s assessment and what they want to do at that location.”
