Ose, who served in the 1999-2005 House, said he would run if Newsom is recalled or in the 2022 regular election, when the governor will have to run for a second term if he survives the current campaign to remove him.
“I got to the point where I decided that I’m going to run for governor here in the state of California, whether in the recall or in the normal 2022 cycle. I’ve lived here my entire life, I’ve never seen it so messed up,” Ose said in an interview on KFBK during which he announced his run.

Ose framed his campaign as opposed to Newsom’s treatment of the coronavirus. Frustration increased among Republicans because of their restrictions on the coronavirus, including the closure of schools and businesses. He also caused a firestorm when he ordered some businesses to close and asked Californians to stay home only to be seen in a fancy restaurant that celebrated the birthday of a political adviser.

Supporters of the recall are facing a deadline on Wednesday to send 1.5 million valid signatures to get a recall on the vote, a scenario that is appearing more and more likely.
