Former Rams DC Brandon Staley has been hired as new Chargers coach

Speaking of going up the stairs quickly. Brandon Staley was an NFL coach for just four seasons and coordinator for just one season. Now, he has been hired as the Chargers’ next head coach, according to the NFL Network.

At just 38 years old, Staley was Defense Coordinator in Division III at John Carroll University (Ohio) in 2016. From there, he was hired to be the linebacker coach for the Chicago Bears. He spent two years in that position before being hired as coach of the Broncos linebackers. Only one season at that job earned him DC’s LA job with the Rams.

Staley took office with the Rams replacing the legendary defensive mind, Wade Philips. And he trained defending the Rams from one of the top 15 units in 2019 to the best in the NFL at both allowed points and allowed yards in 2020.

The Rams would win their Wild Card showdown with the Seahawks, but lost on Saturday to the Packers, leaving Staley available and he was promptly brought back for a second interview and hired as the new Chargers coach, replacing Anthony Lynn, who was fired after a second consecutive losing season.
