Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang announces candidacy for New York City

NEW YORK (WABC) – Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has announced that he is running for mayor of New York City.

On Wednesday night, Yang released a video on YouTube entitled “Why am I running for mayor”.

The video says:

“I moved to New York 25 years ago. I came of age, fell in love and became a father here. Seeing our city as it is now breaks my heart. What we will do in the coming months will determine the trajectory of our city for decades.

I’m running for mayor because I see a crisis – and I believe I can help.

We need to launch the largest basic income program in history, invest in a human-centered economy, return to fact-based governance and create an accessible health system. We need to do all of this while implementing responsible and intelligent policing, building affordable housing, eliminating the digital divide in our city, modernizing city transport and services and much more. Let’s move New York forward – together.

The Democratic primaries are on June 22, 2021. I can’t wait for you to join us in our campaign to revive and rebuild our city. “

Brooklyn neighborhood president Eric Adams also threw his hat in the ring for the mayor of New York. Other possible names competing for the position include de Blasio’s former chief of staff, Maya Wiley, former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia, former Bloomberg administration member and Obama Shaun Donovan, former non-profit executive Dianne Morales, former Veteran Services Commissioner Loree Sutton and former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire.

Yang, an American businessman and philanthropist, would be only the second Asian-American candidate to run for mayor and appear on the ballots.
JP Morgan executive Arthur Chang also plans to run.

In 2013, New York state senator John Liu was running for mayor of New York City, rather than running for re-election as controller.
