Coy was fired in January.
Former Columbus, Ohio police office, Adam Coy, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Andre Hill, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced on Wednesday.
Coy was arrested and charged with one charge of murder, one charge of criminal assault and two charges of abandonment duty.
“I believe the evidence supports the accusation,” said Yost during a news conference on Wednesday night.
Hill, 47, was shot dead by Coy on December 22. The officers were responding to a 311 non-emergency call for a noise complaint.
Images from the police body’s camera released in December showed policemen handcuffing Hill apparently lifeless after shooting him several times and then stopped for five minutes and 11 seconds without providing first aid.
Coy told authorities that he thought he saw a firearm in Hill before shooting. Hill had a cell phone in his left hand, but no weapons when he left a friend’s garage.
Officer Amy Detweiler, who also responded to the complaint, told investigators she heard Coy shout that Hill had a gun in his hand. She couldn’t remember whether Coy gave Hill an order to drop a gun.
Detweiler said he did not see a gun in Hill’s hand and that he saw no threat from Hill during the incident.
Coy only turned on the body camera after shooting Hill. But his camera automatically activated and recorded 60 seconds of the episode without sound.
He was fired in January after an investigation determined his use of lethal force was unreasonable.
Coy’s bail hearing will be held Thursday.
