Former NFL star Kellen Winslow II faces 14 years in prison for raping

Kellen Winslow II, a former NFL star, was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Wednesday as part of a court settlement for a series of sexual crimes against five women in Southern California.

The 14-year sentence was the maximum allowed under the agreement. Winslow was convicted of forced rape, rape of an unconscious person, assault with the intention of committing rape, indecent exposure and obscene conduct in public. One of the women was homeless.

Winslow, 37, appeared via videoconference at the San Diego Superior Court in Vista and declined to make a statement saying his lawyers advised him not to speak.

“In the future, I intend to tell my story,” he said.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Blaine Bowman called Winslow a “sexual predator” who targeted especially vulnerable women.

“The victims’ vulnerability was not accidental. It was the type of victim you sought because you felt that perhaps they would not report the crime “or” would not be considered credible by the jurors, “Bowman said.

Four women gave statements and described the suffering later.

“It is affecting my life every day and every night,” said a woman. “I never feel safe inside or out. You have done so much damage to my life.”

Winslow’s lawyers said his client, the son of wealthy Kellen Winslow in the Hall of Fame, suffers from a traumatic brain injury from playing football and a motorcycle accident that ended his career.

Winslow was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2004 and during his career he also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets and New England Patriots.

Formerly one of the highest paid players in his position, who last played in the NFL in 2013, Winslow was found guilty of raping a homeless woman in Encinitas. The jurors also convicted him of two misdemeanors – indecent exposure and obscene public act – involving two other women. The jury did not agree with other charges, including the alleged rape of the hitchhiker and the rape of the unconscious 17-year-old in 2003 when he was 19.
