Dwayne Haskins’ early NFL career did not go as planned. The choice of the first round of 2019 did not even reach two full years with the Washington Football Team before being released, but a former NFL defender thinks he will have a second chance with another team.
On Monday, Washington dismissed Haskins, who authorized the dismissals to become a free agent just a day later. Since he was chosen, Haskins has been fighting on the pitch and has also had his share of problems off the pitch. Now that he is free to sign with a new team, former NFL defender and current ESPN analyst Domonique Foxworth believes that some of the criticisms of Haskins have been overstated. Foxworth attributes this to a player simply being immature.
“He deserves a lot of the criticism he received, but I think some, if it is a little exaggerated enough to ask if he will have another chance?” Foxworth said. “This is not something that I think is fair to consider at the moment. Maybe he is not as good as we thought. Perhaps that year in college was a fluke or a product of the system. Maybe he is bad. But a choice in the first round, these guys always have a second chance, unless there are mitigating circumstances with the law or with some addiction or something. He has none of these problems. He’s immature. “
It seems that Foxworth is right about Haskins being able to get another chance relatively soon. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, several teams have already considered adding the former Ohio State Buckeye. One of these teams resides at NFC South.
“As a free QB agent Dwayne Haskins it is unlikely to sign before the season, he is getting the interest of several teams, said the source, ”wrote Rapoport on Twitter. “One of them is the Carolina Panthers, but there are others who are intrigued by Haskins.”
Carolina did not join the first group of SportsLine teams that could sign Haskins, as experts have released the probabilities of where Haskins will play in 2021. The Pittsburgh Steelers opened as a favorite to sign Haskins as Ben Roethlisberger’s main reserve at +300, followed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+500).
The New England Patriots, who signed Cam Newton to a one-year contract in July, he may be looking for a new call sign if the franchise is not long-term with the former Panthers star. They are seated at +600, by SportsLine. The Los Angeles Rams (+700), Indianapolis Colts (+900), New Orleans Saints (+1200), Denver Broncos (+1500) and Atlanta Falcons (+2000) complete the list of odds.
