4:28 PM PT – One of Hagler’s sons, James, told TMZ that his father was taken to a hospital in New Hampshire early Saturday after experiencing difficulty breathing and chest pains at home.
We are told that about four hours later, the family was notified that he had passed away. The cause of death is still unknown at this time … it is also unclear whether Hagler’s death is related to COVID.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler – ex-middleweight champion and one of the greatest boxers who ever lived – died … according to his wife.
A post with the sad news was published Saturday on the official page of Hagler’s fan club on Facebook, reading … “I am sorry to make a very sad announcement. Today, unfortunately, my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire . Our family asks you to respect our privacy during this difficult time. “
The note was signed by his wife, Kay. The exact circumstances of his death were not disclosed.

Hagler went down in history as a great boxer, and perhaps one of the best – if not the best – middleweight fighter to set foot in the ring. He held the title of undisputed world middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987 … an incredible race.
He had his first shot at the title in 79 against Vito Antuofermo – which was called a draw, although many felt that Hagler had won it. He had a second chance at the title the following year … this time against Alan Minter – whom Hagler hit in a 3rd round stoppage.
Year after year, Hagler successfully defended his title … but one of the most brutal fights so far has ended up falling against Tommy Hearns in 1985, which was classified as “The War”. There were only three rounds, but they were all brutal … especially the opening one, which is considered one of the most violent and action-packed to date.
Hagler’s reign came to an end in 1987 against none other than the boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonard, who left retirement for another title shot. They went through twelve rounds and, although many say that Hagler won the SRL … the latter was announced as the winner in a split decision. It is true that Leonard landed a higher percentage of punches.
After boxing, Hagler pursued a career in cinema … in Italy, no less. He starred notably in ‘Indio’ and ‘Indio 2’, as well as some other action films. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.
Hagler leaves his current wife and five children from a previous marriage. He was 66 years old.
