Former giant Alex Tanney gets job on Eagles coaching staff

A former veteran defender of the New York Giants now has a coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.

No, it’s not Eli Manning.

Two days after quarterback Alex Tanney, 33, retired from the Giants, he returned to the NFL as an offensive quality control coach for the Eagles.

Although Tanney played only two games in the NFL, he had a nine-year career in the league, often serving as a mentor as a coach for younger players. He was a newcomer to the Chiefs in 2012, when the Eagles’ new coach, Nick Sirianni, was the receiver’s coach.

Tanney’s most memorable moment on the pitch was when he replaced Manning in the fourth period of a victory on December 15, 2019, Manning’s last match and his appearance in his 16-year career at Big Blue.

Tanney will work directly under new offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who was responsible for the Los Angeles Chargers attack last season. Steichen also worked alongside Sirianni when the two were on Chargers’ coaching staff a few years ago. Sirianni was the Colts’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, before being appointed Eagles coach.

It is not yet known whether Jaylen Hurts or Carson Wentz will be Sirianni’s starting quarterback. The Eagles would have gone to great lengths to negotiate Wentz, but received no offers to their liking.
