Former Gamecocks pitcher Wil Crowe is on the move

A former South Carolina baseball major is on the move in the MLB. Right handed launcher Wil Crowe was traded from Washington Nationals to Pittsburgh Pirates. Crowe, along with Eddy Yean, switch from the Nationals to the Pirates in exchange for the first MLB baseman Josh Bell.

The change came on Thursday, when the Pirates acquired some potential customers. Crowe, who made three MLB appearances this season for Washington and totaled 8 1/3 innings, is considered the third candidate in the Nationals organization. Yean is the 6th potential customer in the organization, according to MLB.com’s ranking of potential customers.

Crowe ended the 2020 season in the MLB with a record of 0-2 and an average of 11.88 races won in his three games, which were all starts, by the club. He hit eight strokes and gave up 14 strokes, with five of those hitting home runs. He also walked eight.

The move puts Crowe in an organization with a former South Carolina teammate, who is also on Pirates’ best prospects list. While it is not yet known where Crowe will be placed, he will be in the same organization as the right-handed pitcher. Carmen Mlodzinski, which was selected in the 2020 MLB Draft by the Pirates. Mlodzinski is already considered prospect # 8 in the Pittsburgh organization.

Crowe spent four years in South Carolina, playing in three of them. He missed the 2016 season after Tommy John’s surgery, but returned in 2017 to pitch 92 1/3 innings and reach 6-5 with an average of 3.21 races won. He was finally No. 65 overall choice in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Nationals and made his MLB debut on August 22, 2020.
