GREENVILLE, SC (AP) – A former South Carolina sheriff’s deputy was charged for his alleged role in a July incident in which he was accused of illegally arresting someone, leaving that person injured.

Ryan Andrew Gibson, 29, of Greer, was charged on Friday with assault and third-degree assault, misconduct and improbity in office, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

The Greenville County sheriff’s office began an investigation after community activist Traci Fant contacted the procedure to file a formal complaint against Gibson, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

“Although the incident was extremely unfortunate, I am very grateful to Ms. Fant and her activism for bringing this incident to our attention and communicating the appropriate methods for filing a complaint against a GCSO employee. As seen in the investigation, our investigators within our Professional Standards Office conducted a thorough and timely investigation and resolved the matter with a constant complaint, ”said Sheriff Hobart Lewis.

Greenville News reported that Gibson was fired on August 5.

Gibson is currently being held at the Greenville County Detention Center. It is not known if he has a lawyer.
