Former Dallas Maverick Shawn Bradley paralyzed after the car crashes into his bike, the team says

Bradley released the details on Wednesday for the first time since the January 20 accident, one block from his home in St. George Utah, the Mavericks said in a statement.

The former 7-foot, 6-inch basketball player underwent neck fusion surgery after the accident and spent the past eight weeks in hospital and undergoing rehabilitation, according to the note.

“His strong sense of faith is being tested as he participates in strenuous physical therapy and learns how to deal with the challenges of paraplegia,” said the team.

“Doctors have warned him that his road to recovery will be long and arduous, perhaps an even more difficult physical challenge than playing professional basketball.”

Still, he is in a good mood, according to the statement, and plans to use the accident “as a platform to raise public awareness of the importance of bicycle safety,” the statement said.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he was “sad” to learn of the accident.

“Shawn has always been incredibly determined and has shown a fighting spirit,” said Cuban. “We wish him only the best in his recovery. He will always be part of our Mavs family.”

In his more than eight seasons with the team, Bradley “has demonstrated all the qualities you want in a person who represents your organization,” said Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson. “He has always shown unwavering courage and determination and we are thinking about him in this difficult time. He is a Maverick for the rest of his life.”
